TRYOUTS - SELECTION CRITERIA
Purpose
The purpose of these guidelines is to document the tryout process to the HVVC volleyball community.
The hope is that by making everyone familiar with the process, a general understanding is gained, misunderstandings are avoided, and doubts concerning fairness are removed.
Tryouts Selection Process
Early Tryouts for National and Regional Teams - July & August:
Initially, we evaluate and offer some spots in National Teams (Blue & White) and/or Regional Teams. To confirm your spot upon receiving an offer, a deposit is required, and payment can be completed between August and November.
If you are unable to attend the early tryouts scheduled for July or August, you may contact the office at officehvvc@gmail.com to request an alternative evaluation date. Please note that we do not provide individual tryouts. If necessary, makeup tryouts will be scheduled during position training, fall training, or clinics.
Possible Early Tryouts outcome:
National Invitation - Upon acceptance, you will receive an invitation to attend Final Tryouts, during which your final team placement (Blue or White) will be determined.
Regional Invitation - If you accept the Regional offer, you will receive an invitation to Final Tryouts where you will undergo reevaluation for potential inclusion in the National teams.
Invite Back - If you receive an Invite Back, you will be invited to Final Tryouts, where a reevaluation will take place for both National and Regional team considerations.
Final Tryouts for National, Regional and Select teams - October/November:
Players who undergo reevaluation will have their positions on each team confirmed, and there is the possibility for players committed to the Regional teams to move up to the National teams as well. We will evaluate players for the Select teams, while there is no need for tryouts to participate in our Home League. The fees for the final teams will be verified, and a payment plan will be established, allowing for payment in five installments. If you need a special payment plan, you may contact the office at officehvvc@gmail.com. The early commitment deposit will be credited towards all team fees.
Possible Final Tryouts outcome:
National / Regional tryouts:
National Offer - This includes your final team placement, either in the Blue or White team.
Regional Offer - This offer includes your final team placement, either in the Black or Grey team.
Invite Back - If you receive an invite back, you will be invited to try out for the Select teams. There is no need to re-register or pay any additional fees.
Select tryouts:
Upon receiving an offer, you will be granted a 48-hour window to accept the offer, select your preferred payment method, and make an initial payment to secure your position on the team.
Tryout Criteria:
The coaching staff will be looking for coachable athletes who have a great work ethic, love to compete, and want to learn to become better players and teammates. Prior volleyball experience or skill helps but is not required. (Great volleyball players are not made just made better!) Prospective athletes will be tested and evaluated for their overall athletic ability and level of volleyball skill.
Coaches will apply the following criteria (in this order):
What to expect at tryouts?
Skill / Competition Evaluation:
Prospective athletes will be taught the basics of the Volleyball system, including passing, serving, attacking, setting, blocking and defense. Evaluators will be situated, and players rotated through stations such that the evaluators get a chance to see all the girls participate in all types of drills and competitions. Players’ skills will be rated on the numerical scale below through various drills, competitive activities, and games.
Attitude Evaluation:
Prospective HVVC player should be willing to try hard, make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and keep trying. Coaches will take note of those players who listen, follow directions, and ask questions when necessary. Athletes who are COACHABLE COMPETITORS stand the best chance of making the team. We will be looking for individuals who are high speed and low drag.
Players must be able to lead, follow, or get out of the way!
How to Impress the Coaches:
Evaluators
The head coach will identify “qualified” evaluators – those with the experience and expertise necessary to judge volleyball talent. The goal is to have more than just the head coaches’ evaluation for determining a player’s tangible and intangible skills.
Team Selection Process
Individuals will be evaluated in the following areas:
Once the tryout is complete, the evaluators/coaches will meet to discuss each player individually and complete subjective assessments.
Athletes will know if they have acquired a position on the team by being notified by HVVC office. The team may include up to 10 players.
